The Actual Reasons Why You Have Freckles on Your Face

Skin health is extremely important, especially considering that your skin is the largest organ of your body. The average adult will carry between three and four kilograms of skin and around two square meters of it. On top of that, your skin is the first thing that people will see, and because of that, people tend to be very conscious of the quality and state of what their skin looks like. With that said, skin that subjectively doesn’t look good doesn’t always mean that it is skin that’s in poor health; people have their own ideas of what skin should or shouldn’t look like, and health facts have nothing to do with those opinions. Freckles have received mixed reactions regarding whether people love or hate them, but when it comes to skin health, they’re totally harmless and are more of an aesthetic thing than anything.

What Are Freckles?

Freckles are small brown spots that can be found on different areas of your skin, although they do typically appear on the face or shoulders. Even though there are some methods you can use to take to remove or reduce the appearance of freckles, these small spots on your skin are not harmful in any way. Generally speaking, freckles are caused by an overabundance of melanin, which is a pigment that determines the colour of things like one’s skin and hair.

Specific Causes of Freckles

Outside of having an overabundance of melanin, there are other more specific causes of face freckles. Regardless of the cause of your facial freckles, it is still important to remember that the freckles themselves are harmless and do not need to be removed for the health of your skin. There are two types of freckles, and each type has different ways by which that they develop, although they look the same in appearance. The two types of freckles are ephelides and solar lentigines.

Ephelides freckles are caused by exposure to the sun and the development of sun burns. These are the most common types of freckles, as they can appear at any age when someone does not properly protect themselves from ultraviolet rays and are most common in people with lighter skin. Solar lentigines, on the other hand, develop during adulthood and include other things on top of freckles, such as aging spots and sun spots. These freckles are also most common in people with lighter skin, and they are also more common in adults who are over age forty.

Some people are more prone to getting freckles, and this is determined by a person’s genetics. With that said, freckles are generally caused by sun exposure. While freckles themselves are harmless, prolonged periods of sun exposure may cause other issues, so you should speak with a doctor if you spend long periods of time in the sun without proper protection.
